What is Summit Reading Center?

Founded in Boulder in 2006 and now based in Denver since 2020, Summit Reading Center is a specialized learning center dedicated to strengthening foundational literacy skills for students of all ages. I provide individualized instruction in reading, writing, language comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and math, focusing on helping students overcome challenges like dyslexia and other language-based learning difficulties. My unique approach aims to build what I call a "Reading Center" or reading network in the brain, empowering students to become confident and independent learners.

What makes Summit Reading Center different from other tutoring services?

I go beyond traditional content tutoring. My approach uses multi-sensory programs and leverages the latest learning science to address the root causes of learning difficulties. I offer comprehensive diagnostic evaluations to identify specific needs, then design a program tailored to each student. My methods are designed to help students make significant progress in a shorter timeframe, often seeing several years of progress in as little as six weeks with intensive instruction.

Where do your sessions take place?

I bring my services to you! Enjoy sessions in the comfort of your home or a convenient public location like a library or meeting room.

Who provides the services? Do you have employees?

All services are personally provided by me, Nicolas, the founder and lead specialist. This ensures a consistent, personalized approach and direct communication throughout your program. While I have had employees in the past and have administrative support, all direct client sessions and program design are handled by me.

Who can benefit from Summit Reading Center's programs?

At Summit Reading Center, I work with students of all ages, from elementary school through adulthood. I specialize in helping individuals who are struggling with learning due to:

  • Dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges

  • ADHD

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)

  • Other developmental challenges

  • Reading fluency and comprehension

  • Spelling and writing

  • Vocabulary development

  • Math foundational skills

If you or your child is having difficulty keeping up in school, struggles with homework, or you simply feel like something isn't quite right with their learning, I can help.

Do you use the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach?

My methodology is deeply rooted in the principles of Structured Literacy, a term recognized by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) to describe highly effective, research-based interventions for reading and writing, including the Orton-Gillingham approach. I apply the explicit, systematic, cumulative, multisensory, and diagnostic-prescriptive principles that make OG so effective, ensuring my methodologies meet or exceed expectations for the same rigorous, impactful outcomes. My training at Lindamood-Bell Learning Center emphasized extensive, ongoing observation and feedback – far exceeding the supervised hours common in many specific program certifications, including some OG pathways. This level of intensive, personalized mentorship has refined my practice to an exceptional level of precision.

What services do you offer?

I offer a range of individualized services, including:

  • Reading instruction: Utilizing programs like Lindamood-Bell's LiPS (Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program) and Seeing Stars to develop phonemic awareness and symbol imagery.

  • Language comprehension: Through programs like Visualizing and Verbalizing, I help students develop mental pictures from language to improve comprehension, recall, and critical thinking.

  • Writing and spelling instruction.

  • Vocabulary development.

  • Math instruction: Using a multi-sensory approach to build foundational math knowledge.

  • Initial diagnostic evaluations: To pinpoint specific learning needs.

  • Ongoing assessments: To track progress and adjust programs as needed.

I believe in starting with what the student knows, building confidence and skills from there.

What training and education do you have?

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a Minor in English from Iowa State University. This unique academic background provides a strong foundation in the brain, behavior, and the intricacies of language. I received rigorous, specialized training at Lindamood-Bell Learning Centers, where I was quickly promoted to a school consultant, successfully running literacy programs in public schools throughout the Denver area. Furthering my commitment to education, I completed coursework in education at the University of Colorado Denver. With over two decades of experience in literacy intervention, and having personally trained dozens of professionals, I offer unparalleled expertise and a proven track record of helping hundreds of students build foundational literacy skills.

How do I know if my child needs your services?

Common indicators that a student could benefit from my support include:

  • Difficulty with phonics, sounding out words, or recognizing sight words.

  • Slow or hesitant reading.

  • Poor reading comprehension, even if they can read the words.

  • Struggling with spelling.

  • Difficulty expressing thoughts clearly in writing or orally.

  • Challenges with math facts or applying math concepts.

  • Frustration or avoidance of reading and schoolwork.

If you feel specialized services are the right path for your child, you're likely right. My extensive track record speaks for itself, with a long history of satisfied clients who consistently report that my services were a valuable investment that made a real difference.

What do you tell students who say they don't need to write because AI will do it for them?

In the age of AI, students might question the need to learn writing, but it's crucial to understand that AI is a tool for amplification, not a replacement for human thought. Learning to write develops essential critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills necessary for every aspect of life, from clear emails to effective arguments. While AI can assist with brainstorming or drafting, it lacks original ideas, nuanced understanding, and a unique voice; thus, humans must possess strong writing fundamentals to guide AI effectively, fact-check its output, and infuse their work with genuine creativity and personal insight. Ultimately, mastering writing is about developing the cognitive capacity to truly understand, synthesize, and express ideas, enabling students to control AI and contribute meaningfully rather than simply consuming AI-generated content.

What tests do you use?

I use a battery of tests that target specific areas of literacy and language. The following are among those he uses:

  • C-TOPP (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing): Assesses phonological awareness, phonological memory, and rapid naming.

  • GORT (Gray Oral Reading Test): Measures oral reading fluency and comprehension.

  • WRAT (Wide Range Achievement Test): Provides a quick screening of basic academic skills (reading, spelling, arithmetic).

  • PPVT (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test): Measures receptive vocabulary.

  • TOWL (Test of Written Language): Evaluates various aspects of written expression.

  • SI test (Sensory Imagery test).

  • Woodcock-Johnson word attack portion.

What is the typical program structure?

Summit programs are highly individualized, but generally involve sessions 2 to 4 days a week, for 1 to 2 hours a day. Students typically complete a 50-hour program to achieve significant gains, though some may require fewer or more hours depending on their specific needs. I provide free mid- and post-assessments to diligently track progress and ensure we are on track. After a comprehensive evaluation, we will provide an estimate of the hours recommended for your child.

What results can I expect?

Summit programs are designed to deliver tangible, lasting results. Many students experience significant gains in reading, writing, and comprehension skills with a positive change in attitude often detected after the very first day. I focus on efficiently filling skill gaps, then building fluency and confidence through consistent practice. Client testimonials speak to students becoming independent and confident readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers.

What do your services cost?

  • Initial evaluation: $450

  • Regular hourly rate: My standard rate is $95/hour

  • 50-hour pre-paid package: $80/hour, a $15/hour savings

While the 50-hour program works for most students, it's important to note that some students will need more time, and some will need less. Once the initial evaluation is complete, I'll create a personalized recommendation for the number of hours that will best support your goals.

How do you ensure timely and valuable progress?

Many families share concerns about tutoring programs that extend for years without clear progress or a return on their investment. My approach is different. My personalized programs are specifically designed for impactful progress in months, not years, prioritizing your time and financial resources. Here's how I ensure your time and investment are maximized:

  • Targeted approach: Avoids wasting time on generic lessons.

  • Maximum engagement: I'm skilled at meeting students where they are and guiding them to where they need to be. Each session is designed for maximum learning and engagement.

  • Clear progress tracking: I set specific, measurable objectives. I then work diligently to meet these goals, ensuring you get faster results and avoid unnecessary hours.

My aim is to provide focused, effective support that leads to significant progress, ultimately saving you both valuable time and money.

How does a reading teacher teach math?

My background in reading brings a unique and powerful approach to teaching math, especially when it comes to deciphering story problems, understanding concepts, and applying critical thinking. Math is a language with its own vocabulary and many of the words used in math have subtle meanings that can trip students up. I teach math students to identify patterns, draw inferences, and evaluate information in order to navigate tough, multi-step mathematical concepts. I work with math students from beginner level through algebra.

Do you take insurance?

No, I do not directly accept insurance. However, some insurance plans may offer out-of-network benefits that could cover a portion of our services. To explore this possibility, we recommend speaking with your child's pediatrician or the diagnosing physician. You can ask them if they can provide a Letter of Medical Necessity or a prescription/referral for a learning intervention as part of a treatment plan for a diagnosed condition (e.g., Specific Learning Disorder, ADHD). This documentation may help with your insurance claim. Please note that we cannot guarantee coverage, as insurance policies vary widely. It's always best to contact your insurance provider directly to understand your specific benefits and requirements for reimbursement.

How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with me. During this consultation, we can discuss your concerns, explain the process in more detail, and determine if an initial diagnostic evaluation is the right next step for your child. Contact me here to schedule a free consultation
